How can an ancient Indian elephant help you live your dreams?
Ancient India. The main square. Snake charmers hypnotize you. The scent of spices lingers in the humidity. Foreign sounds waft through the air. A storyteller takes you to a quiet corner shaded by trees…
You sit. He tells you the following:
There once were six blind men. Each felt a different part of an elephant. The parts they felt were the trunk, tusk, side, leg, tail and ear. After they felt a part of the elephant they were each asked what it was they felt.
One by one each man proudly and arrogantly described with absolute certainty what it was they felt. The trunk was perceived to be a snake. The tusk was perceived to be a spear. The side was perceived to be a wall. The leg was perceived to be a tree. The tail was perceived to be a rope. The ear was perceived to be a fan. No one perceived it from a wider context. No one perceived it as an elephant. (Story based on an ancient Indian legend.)
Are you driving through life with perception blinders?
The men had very limited perception and only knew that which they filtered through their tiny – and thus faulty – lens. They arrogantly assumed their mistaken, limited perception was valid.
When you leave your perception on automatic you neglect your power to interpret and attach meaning from a wider lens. You are throwing your power of choice away. You are only experiencing a very small portion of life. And you are in essence perceiving “blindly” like the men in the example above. Driving blindly can only take you so far. If you’d like to go further you need to open your eyes.
You need perception power.
What is the fastest way to perception power?
The fastest way you can consciously widen your perception is through your imagination. Not just any use of the imagination, but more specifically, imagination used in ways that will increase your creative power. And you use this creative power to create the results you want in your life.
It’s the difference between seeing things from 1 foot away versus seeing them from 1,000 feet away. Imagination will enable you to soar high above any dead end and see the way out.
You can try two simple examples now. These exercises will help you free some unseen positions you hold. These positions are part of your perceptual filter.
Perception Power Exercise #1
Take out a piece of paper. Draw a line down the middle. On the top of the left side write:
If _________ happens then my future will be different than my present.
Write whatever comes to mind for a minimum of 5 minutes. Then, stop when you feel you have run out of steam.
Perception Power Exercise #2
Imagine that you are having a meeting with your larger Self. Imagine this larger Self is an all-knowing genius part of you. It resides outside of your everyday life. However, it is aware of things about you and your world that you are not.
Ask your larger Self the following:
What is not possible for my future?
Write down the response. Write for a minimum of 5 minutes whatever comes up. You can continue thereafter until you feel you have run out of steam and exhausted the question. This exercise will help reveal perceptions you hold that block you. It will also help to open up new perspectives and avenues of approach.
But isn’t it too hard to change perception?
Often in our culture we are taught to approach changes rationally and logically. But this is only a very small part of the picture. The real powerhouse behind the curtain is imagination. And it is a natural part of you.
Think of a time in your life when you imagined something differently. You perceived something differently via your imagination and it sparked massive changes in your life. For example, maybe you imagined yourself as no longer someone who smoked. Or perhaps you were overweight and you imagined yourself as lean? Maybe you imagination yourself in a new role at work?
The difference I am talking about is consciously taking control of this very natural ability. Once you get used to it you’ll know it is an integral part of who you are. Therefore, it is not foreign or complicated at all.
Will I have to give up my beliefs or ways of living?
Once you experience expanded perception, things that you don’t want tend to fall away organically. Not out of force or feelings of loss. But as a natural progression of you growing as a person. Ultimately, however, it is up to you. You can keep or lose whatever you choose. This is what perception power is about.
Release the brakes and travel the road of freedom
Perception provides meaning to events in your life. Usually perception runs automatically. This narrows your perspective. A narrowed perspective diminishes your choices, options and possibilities. Thus, the results in your life suffer.
Logic only is not enough to change. You need to use your imagination in empowering ways and create results in your life. This is the way to leave the dead-end behind and travel an open road. Take the next exit to imagination road where perception power lives.
